How To Start As A Freelance Writer

Before venturing into any form of writing,it is very important to follow specific writing guidelines and abide by laid rules and regulations that govern any print or written work. First of all you must understand what is plagiarism, its causes, remedies and ways to prevent plagiarism in your written work.

For now i will only cover what plagiarism is as its causes, remedies and how it is prevented will be covered in our next issue.

Plagiarism is the unjust act of stealing, copying or duplicating other people's written work and representing it as one's own first hand material. This means as an aspiring writer you should avoid any form of copy-pasting in your writen work.

Freelance writing can be a great work from home opportunity. However,i would like to point out that freelance writing is not as easy as it may seem. It's very obvious to pass through rejection, low pay and a great deal of hard work before establishing a career in writing. All in all it takes dedication and good writing skill and eventually success is achieved.

Tips To Start As a Freelance Writer

A. Persistence On Your Work

Anyone aspiring to be a writer is going to experience rejection at some point,it is the nature of the work. Success is determined by how best you handle the rejection of your work. If the rejection is positive, learn from it but more often than not ignore it. There are a thousand reasons why a person or company may reject your work and majority of them have nothing to do with your abilities and talent. Always remember that there is always a new opportunity waiting for you to find it.

B. Do Some Free Work At First

As an aspiring writer, you may have to lower your standards at first and do some free work. This will do you some good on your journet to professionalism and alsi in building your portfolio. This does not mean slaving for hours for some company who refuses to pay you. Ensure you do just enough to popularize your name and get some pieces to add to your resume. Also ask if you can write guest articles and blog posts on topics that may interest you on popular blogs. With experience under your belt, you can start charging a worthy fee for yout articles. Once you start charging a fee,be reasonable and do not allow clients to talk you down to working for less.

C. Discover Your Interests/Niche

Many people know that they want to write but have no idea about what they like to write. It is reasonably important to follow your passion in your freelance career. Also, experimenting with different types of writing can help you find your niche. One other way to discover your passion is reading lots of other people's work. You can also learn through practice. The moment you find a place where you excel and enjoy the work, you can start searching for more of those types of jobs and eventually become one of the top writers in that field. Clients look out for people with experience with a particular kind of writing.

D. Always Look Out For Work

Unlike most other types of work, you will almost never fill out an application and be finished looking for work once you are hired. Many freelance jobs last for a short period of time while others are part-time jobs. Inorder to make it full-time,you find yourself working for dozens of clients at once. It is a norm to have clients who only need you seasonally or at random times throughout the year. In the long-run,you get to have a client who hires you full-time. If you are constantly looking for work,at no particular time will you have nothing to do or borrowing debts to sustain yourself. You will have a stream of dollars flowing.

E. Be Professional On Your Work

Working from home means that you rarely meet a client face to face. You will mostly communicate with your clients via Email, phone or Skype. Some people take advantage of this mode of communication to act unprofessionaly.
If you want to create a strong business
with a good reputation, you should treat your clients as if you are meeting in an office. Always work to meet your deadlines and always do a good job-well researched.

NB: At times to land a job,you may be required to fill out an application form,so keep on updating your portfolio. Updating atleast once a year with new materials is a good idea.
